Melbourne Train Expansion: 400+ New Services, Direct Routes, and More! (2026)

The Victorian government has announced a major expansion of train services, adding 400 extra weekly trains across the state. This ambitious timetable shake-up, set to begin on August 23, aims to revolutionize public transport by improving connectivity and reducing waiting times. The initiative is a direct result of the Metro Tunnel project, which has freed up space on the network by removing certain line trains from the City Loop.

One of the key features of this expansion is the introduction of cross-city train services, allowing commuters to travel directly from Melbourne's west to the bayside suburbs without the need to change trains. This will significantly benefit those living in areas like Werribee, Laverton, and Williamstown, who can now access the MCG or Werribee Zoo with greater ease. The services will run from Newport and Laverton to Sandringham during the morning peak, from Newport during the evening peak, and from Werribee, Laverton, and Williamstown during off-peak hours. This efficient routing ensures that commuters can travel across the city with minimal hassle.

The expanded services are not limited to cross-city travel. The Upfield and Craigieburn lines will see a significant improvement in frequency, reducing waiting times from 40 to 20 minutes off-peak. This is a much-needed enhancement, as the current waiting times are a source of frustration for many commuters. Additionally, the Belgrave, Lilydale, Hurstbridge, Mernda, Alamein, and Glen Waverley lines will receive extra services, with Friday and Saturday night services to Ringwood and eight extra Sunday morning services on the Mernda and Hurstbridge lines. The Wyndham Vale line will also benefit from larger trains, increasing capacity by 50%.

The Metro Tunnel has played a pivotal role in this expansion, creating the necessary capacity to introduce these essential services. Metro Trains' chief executive, Raymond O'Flaherty, emphasizes the ongoing need for improvement, stating that the network requires more services and increased frequency. This sentiment is shared by the Public Transport Users Association's Daniel Bowen, who welcomes the increased frequency and cross-city services, acknowledging that there is still room for further enhancements.

In summary, this timetable expansion is a significant step towards improving Melbourne's rail network, offering commuters a more efficient and convenient travel experience. The introduction of cross-city services, reduced waiting times, and increased capacity on various lines demonstrate a thoughtful approach to public transport development. As the network continues to evolve, it is evident that the Victorian government is committed to meeting the growing demand for reliable and accessible public transportation.
